Hebrews 12:4 and Shedding Blood

Today I purposefully woke up at 4:30 AM in order to spend more time with God before going to work. Instead, for the past hour I’ve been reading Emails and visiting blogs. Sigh. On my journey to become “more like Him,” I’m realizing how spiritually undisciplined I am. I feel the Holy Spirit’s distinct prompting as it urges me to do something (wake up NOW so you can pray), although, I did rise as I was nudged, I did not follow the second part of the command, PRAY.

I’m trying desperately to remember the phrases in the Bible where Paul says, “I do not know why I do the things I do, and I resolve not to do them, but I still do them etc.” (These are not the exact words.) But, I couldn’t find the passage. I believe it’s somewhere in Matthew? (Another item to add to my checklist of Spiritual Tasks — STUDY MY BIBLE.)

Instead, I find a different passage and wonder, am I really engaged in a spiritual battle or am I just watching from the sidelines?

Hebrews 12:4 (NIV) In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

  1. Even now, I just got up with the intent of reading more from The Living Flame of Love by St. John of the Cross, but have I done it? No, like you, I’ve been checking e-mails and blogs like yours on Google Reader. I think we all feel like Paul in Romans Chapter 7, I believe, it is. It is a constant struggle, but at least give yourself credit for thinking about it. Some people don’t even get that far. Now the next step: to do something about it. Now for me to turn off the computer and get to that St. John of the Cross. book. Now…bye. The peace of Christ be with you.

  2. YES! Romans 7:14-20 That’s it! That’s what I was looking for!
    God Bless you!

  3. You should read THE INNER VOICE OF LOVE by HENRI NOUWEN. I do believe you would enjoy it.

  4. Thank you Amy, I’m going to check out amazon.com and order it!
