Isa 55:8-13

Isa 55: 8-13 (ESV)

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 for the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower, and bread to the eater. 11 So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 12 For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees shall clap their hands 13. Instead of thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall make a name for the Lord, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

To enter my city apartment one has to navigate around the jungle of plants on my side porch. I have fuchsia, hanging petunias, tomato plants growing in two giant pots, cactii, African Violets, spider plants and I could go on… My plants grow so quickly and beautifully it becomes a problem. Already, my Norfolk Island Pine has tripled in size since it was purchased last December, and I may not have the room to bring it back inside when cool weather comes. But, I still water and care for them: providing each the exact light requirements, temperature and fertilizer. Imagine if the flower pots had legs and ran away from their allocated sunny spot? What if they hid from the oncoming rush of fertilized water? Plants have no power to choose their environment and they are at our complete mercy. In Isaiah, God promises us that His word will fertilize us and make us flourish so that the “…mountains and hills before you shall break forth unto singing, and all the trees shall clap their hands…“ Yet, through our free will, we sometimes choose to flee from that which brings us our greatest good.

Lord God Almighty, Your wisdom is breathtaking. You are the Master Gardener, sitting back, waiting for us to come out of hiding so that You might fertilize us with Your word: the key to joy in this lifetime. You have an assigned spot for each of us in Your garden, help us to choose to send out roots in Your soil so we might become firmly planted in Your word. Amen
